Beyond Rebellion

Punk fashion, which spread under the influence of punk rock music from the mid-1970s to the early 1980s, embodies a rebellious and cynical attitude towards societal norms. In a complex social atmosphere, the ideas of polarization due to rapid industrialization, liberalism, and anarchism gave rise to punk rock as a subculture enjoyed by the youth. Punk not only influenced music but also had a significant impact on fashion. Iconic punk fashion items include rough leather jackets, silver-studded embellishments, bold piercings, chain decorations, and ripped pants. One of the leading designers who drove the punk look at that time was Britain's Vivienne Westwood. She created a unique fashion culture that was unprecedented by combining Scotland’s traditional tartan check with British fashion culture and the rebellious punk look. The work described below was inspired by the design of Vivienne Westwood, a pioneer of punk rock and punk fashion in the 1970s.
